Connected Conversations, Passing It On: Roundtables exploring participatory arts practice

08 January 2014

Connected Culture and Arts & Society are collaborating to create Connected Conversations; Passing It On, a series of four roundtable discussions exploring participatory arts practice through the voices of artists, commissioners, participants and academics.

The roundtables, which will take place at the RSA, will be a series of conversations that include the spectrum of all involved in the diverse field of participatory arts. Each roundtable will be creatively interpreted by an artist and shared with the following roundtable, resulting in four different art forms responding to these conversations. This approach will highlight artistic responses as an integral way of furthering the conversation and ensuring that they remain accessible.

Jocelyn Cunningham, Director at Arts and Society said, “These conversations set out to address the work itself by those that make it happen; the artists, commissioners, participants and academics. We want to listen for how values are being transmitted in varied and complex circumstances and what these might be.  Above all we are listening for courage, intelligence and innovation so that we can better shine a light on it’s learning and in doing so pass it on to inspire others.”

Dominic Campbell from Connected Culture said, “Connected Culture recognises these practices as a spectrum which individual practitioners, companies, commissioners, thinkers and participants move across at various times. We’ve been considering how these practices began and have evolved. What was their birthplace? How have the circumstances changed in which practitioners and commissioners operate, participants engage, thinkers consider? How has this art adapted to changing circumstances and how does it continue to change?”

Connected Conversations: Passing It On is the inaugural project of Arts and Society supported by Arts Council England and the RSA delivered in partnership with Connected Culture.

The four roundtables are curated by Jocelyn Cunningham of Arts and Society and Dominic Campbell of Connected Culture and will take place at the RSA during January and February 2014.
